Zwart wit film – projectie in loop
Een zwart wit film in loop wordt geprojecteerd in de ruimte. Het eerste beeld is een beeld van een klimmuur. Vervolgens klimt een klimmer als het ware in en uit het beeldvlak.
Het klimgebeuren wordt zodanig getoond dat het niet meer gaat over de oorspronkelijke ervaring. De keuze dit filmbeeld in zwart-wit te tonen en de klimmer in en uit het beeldkader te laten klimmen, creëert een afstand, een abstractie als het ware. Juist deze afstand, het anders tonen van een ‘banale’ gebeurtenis, maakt dat we er onze aandacht op vestigen, dat we ‘waarnemen’.
Ook door de uitzuivering van een bepaalde handeling en het steeds herhalen ervan, worden we gedwongen ons op het beeld te fixeren.
Bij een eerste confrontatie met het werk is niet meteen duidelijk waar men naar kijkt; een abstract vlak met vlekken is niet meteen leesbaar als klimmuur. Tot het moment waarop de handen en geleidelijk aan het hele lichaam van de klimmer in en vervolgens uit het beeldkader klimt.

A looped black and white film is projected in a room. At first it shows only the image of a climbing-wall. After a while, a climbing person appears, the climber climbs trough the screen, as it were.
By showing the process of climbing in black and white a certain unrealistic distance appears. It is this distance, this showing of a banal scene in an unrealistic way, that captures the viewers attention.
By showing the pure form of an act and by repeating it, the spectator gets forced to fixate on the image.
Between every repeat of the act the climbing-wall is empty for several seconds before the climber returns. At first the spectator will not immediately realize that what he is seeing is an image of a climbing-wall. But after a while, when the hands of the climber show, he will.
